I love being a part of the collaboration it takes to bring new work to the stage.
I believe design is a fundamental part of theatrical story telling and I think design can create a framework from which we can support and elevate a performance.
Design can be used to communicate different locations or states of mind and can help to draw an audience into a story or performance and allow (or encourage) them to feel what characters onstage are feeling.
Whether designing lighting or set for a production I will work in tandem with the creative team through pre-production, the rehearsal and technical rehearsal process to create a comprehensive and integrated design.
Lighting can tell you where to look and also how to feel. It can be visually striking or it can be extremely natural and subtly realistic. Every production makes use and demands of lighting in distinct ways to create unique effects and I find great pleasure in the craft and versatility of lighting design.
I design lighting for theatre,
site-specific theatre, dance, opera and live music events.
More than just a backdrop.
Set design creates a structure or framework, a concept or context, from which a performance can explore different themes and ideas.
I like to design minimal and conceptual set designs that have integrated lighting. I truly believe a set design is only as good as it is lit, and so I often design lighting and set in tandem.

Variety is the spice of life and as a freelance designer I love working with differnet artists and companies across varying styles and subjects in differnet venues and locations. I have designed for audieces young and old and my work has been presented across the world (Ireland, UK, Mainland Europe, USA, India and Russia).
Site Specific work brings lots of new challenges to design but it also creates untold opportunities. It can invite audiences into unusual and often otherwise closed off sites and buildings, sometimes spaces of great historical significance.
I have designed for site specific work in The Pump House at Dublin Port; The Sailor’s Home and Cleeve’s Condensed Milk Factory in Limerick; Stone Nest (a former Presbyterian church) on Shaftesbury Avenue, and The Big House in Islington, London. I have also designed a show that needed to set up in varying cafes across the United Kingdom.
Musicals are a great joy of mine, both to watch and to design.
I have had the pleasre of designing for the well know musicals: Annie, Assassins, Promises Promises, The Last 5 Years and Top Hat.
I hope to work more in Opera going forward. Opera is where theatrical visuals are often only limited by a designers imagination. Opera often has a scale and ambition that is unparalleled in other live performance. I did an invigorating and Inspiring placement at The English National Opera in 2013.
Dance is a wonderfully creative artform in which lighting
